Pooling Water

This may sound obvious but the reality is that pooling water is incredibly dangerous and someone should be called out right away. Whether it’s a busted pipe in the basement or water coming in from somewhere else, pooling water can be a big problem and should be evaluated by a professional right away.

The Odor

Perhaps you don’t go down in the basement very often, and even when you do it tends to be pretty dark. Even when you can’t see it, your old olfactory nerve likely can. Odor can be a big sign that something is wrong inside your basement. Due to the low air circulation within your basement, an odor can show up sometimes before any discoloration even begins. This particular odor is likely caused by mold or mildew and can indicate that you may have a water damage problem.

Discolored Walls

Whether your basement has a completely finished space or has been left as unfinished storage space, the walls in your basement can still give you the same warning signs. When water damage is present, peeling paint may occur along with bubbling or cracking. Additionally, a stain may begin to appear. This stain may be wet or completely dry. We’ve seen yellow, brown and even copper colored stains on the walls in the past. The texture on the walls and ceilings may also look a little different. Whether it’s warping from the humidity or sagging with soft spots in certain areas, this is a big sign that something is wrong and a professional should come out right away.
